In almost every industry, we hear a lot about worlds equipped with 3D, BIM and virtual reality. Examples of spatial analysis, automatic feature recognition, area planning and 3D design model can be reproduced. There is much to be gained from 3D, including advanced simulations (parallel processes and automation for plants, traffic, utilities, production and construction). However, it is important to be able to use the term “Virtual Reality” randomly to convert the word reality into technically usable data. Yes, our laser scanners have already offered this opportunity, but the BLK 360, the most prominent device of INTERGEO 2017, is fully equipped with user convenience and designed to streamline our workflows.
Autodesk and Leica Geosystems are collaborating on a precision, accessible, lightweight, low-cost scanning hardware-software solution. RECAP pro, one of the BLK 360 Autodesk products, makes almost your entire workflow perfect thanks to the “Reality Capture” software. It promises to offer you the convenience of office on your tablet. Of course, the addition of Autodesk software, Revit, Infraworks, Navisworks, and Civil 3D, directly transfers data to 10 different software stands out as another plus.
How does it work?
A laser scanner calculates 3D XYZ coordinates with 3 measurements (horizontal angle, vertical angle, and a slope distance from the scanner center to the measured point). This is expressed as a “polar” measurement. Adding some trigonometry makes it possible to quickly reach XYZ or Cartesian coordinates.
Simply put, the three-dimensional accuracy of a laser scanner is influenced by the accuracy of polar measurements. The BLK360 has 3D dot sensitivities of 6mm at 10m and 8mm at approximately 20m (1/4 “at 33 and 1/3 at 66). The BLK360 delivers 360,000 measurements per second with full HDR images.
The first step of the scan takes about 30 seconds and the operator can easily control the images as they are taken via the Recap Mobile Professional or the Leica BLK360 controller app. In addition to 64GB of internal memory, when you connect to an iPad Pro, you have as much storage space as your tablet.
